Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month 2025

November 2025—As Louisiana's leading state agency for housing, the Louisiana Housing Corporation (LHC), in partnership with the Louisiana Balance of State Continuum of Care (LABOSCOC) continues its mission to combat homelessness through funding and supportive services. Together, these agencies work closely with shelters, nonprofits, and local organizations that play an active role in addressing homelessness across the state.

This November, LHC and its partners join the national observance of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month. This is a campaign dedicated to bringing attention to the challenges faced by individuals and families struggling with housing instability and food insecurity.

As a part of this initiative, LHC is spotlighting the Iberia Homeless Shelter in New Iberia on its efforts to provide critical resources to men, women, and children who experience homelessness. The shelter serves three parishes — St. Mary, St. Martin, and Iberia — and continues to make a significant impact through housing assistance, case management, and access to essential services.

To further support these efforts, during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month, the Iberia Homeless Shelter asks for hygiene donations to distribute to those seeking assistance. In addition, the Louisiana Housing Corporation will accept hygiene item donations and canned goods throughout November in recognition of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month. Donations will be distributed to the Iberia Homeless Shelter and the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, helping families in need just in time for the holiday season.

Participants willing to donate can drop off their items at LHC Headquarters located at 2415 Quail Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70808. Gray collection bins will be available on the first floor. All donations will be delivered to partner agencies at the end of November.

Hunger and homelessness pose serious challenges for families and individuals across the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 12.2% of Americans experienced some level of food insecurity in 2023, highlighting the growing struggle to afford basic nutrition. In Louisiana, the rate was even higher, with 16.2% of residents facing food insecurity.

The crisis extends beyond access to food. In 2024, the National Alliance to End Homelessness reported 771,480 people nationwide were homeless, based on the annual Point-in-Time Count. In Louisiana, 8 out of every 10,000 residents lacked stable housing, totaling 3,469 individuals without a permanent place to live. This figure represents a 10% increase from 2023, underscoring the urgent need for stronger community support and housing solutions.

During this month, LHC encourages all Louisianans to take an active role in their communities—lending a helping hand to those in need and demonstrating the true spirit of compassion that defines our state.
