New Orleans, LA — The Louisiana Housing Corporation (LHC), alongside local and state partners, broke ground on new construction that will transform a vacant lot in the 7th ward into the St. Bernard Circle Apartments, providing affordable housing to the residents of New Orleans.
The apartment complex will feature 51 one-bedroom and two-bedroom-style units. Residential amenities will include a fitness center, a community room, and ground-floor retail space.
LHC awarded $1.5 million through a 9% Low Income Housing Tax Credit. Three permanent supportive housing units will be set aside as 20% of the Area Median Income (AMI) with Section 811 subsidy.
“Louisiana Housing Corporation (LHC) is proud to be a part of this project, that will revitalize a once vacant lot into a prosperous living space that will serve its community,” said LHC Interim-Executive Director Marjorianna Willman. “We are elated to see developers and contractors utilizing disaster resiliency techniques that will protect these developments and its residents. St. Bernard Circle Apartments will embody FORTIFIED features that we encourage all builders to consider.”
St. Bernard Circle Apartments will be designed as Energy-Star Certified and will have disaster-resiliency features. The project will meet the sustainability criteria of Enterprise Green Communities and FORTIFEID Multifamily Gold Standards.
“We are thrilled to immediately begin construction on the St. Bernard Circle Apartments. This long underutilized but notable location is begging for reinvestment, and we have some exciting plans in store that will offer beautiful, new mixed-income housing opportunities, with a priority on resiliency, sustainability, and preserving local culture,” said HRI Communities President Josh Collen.
