The Louisiana Housing Corporation Celebrates National Weatherization Day

October 30, 2024

October 30, 2024—The Louisiana Housing Corporation (LHC) proudly celebrates National Weatherization Day emphasizing the vital impact of the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) in enhancing home safety, reducing utility costs, and improving overall comfort for Louisiana residents.

National Weatherization Day highlights the importance of preparing homes for diverse climate conditions. By ensuring homes are equipped to handle various weather challenges, we not only promote physical health through improved air quality but also contribute to positive economic outcomes by reducing carbon footprints.

Weatherization involves a variety of tasks designed to prepare homes for any weather condition. This includes weather-stripping doors and windows, evaluating mold/moisture hazards, installing energy-efficient lighting, and repairing minor roof leaks. By safeguarding a home’s interior from external elements, residents can achieve greater comfort and savings throughout the changing seasons.

LHC plays a vital role in this initiative by offering the Weatherization Assistance Program to qualified residents. Through this program, LHC provides services aimed at creating energy-efficient and comfortable living spaces. Our dedicated weatherization team manages the program ensuring that homes receive strategic improvements to minimize energy waste and lower utility bills.

LHC also operates the Louisiana Building Science (LABS) Center, which has recently expanded its weatherization training courses to include IREC Energy Auditor Courses. These courses are essential to our program's whole-house approach. Specialists trained through these courses assess various aspects of a home including heating and cooling systems, electric appliances, air ducts, and sealing. They are equipped to implement energy efficiency and health/safety measures that align with national standards ensuring comprehensive improvements in energy performance.

On October 30, 2024, gifted students from Central Intermediate School in grades 3-5 will participate in an engaging event where they will build small homes and learn about weatherization. Thanks to generous donations from Stanton’s Appliance, Bassett Furniture, and Costco, these students will have materials to create their projects. During this hands-on experience, they will learn how to inspect homes for leaks and understand the necessary repairs, equipping them with valuable skills in energy efficiency.

LHC would also like to thank Atmos Energy for Sponsoring the event by helping pay for transportation and food for this educational class field trip.
