In Observance of Fair Housing Month: Your Rights & Legal Avenues to Address Housing Discrimination with The Louisiana Housing Corporation and Louisiana Attorney General's Office

April 15, 2024

April 15, 2024—April marks the annual observance of Fair Housing Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of fair housing practices and commemorating the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968.

Emphasizing the importance of Fair Housing Month, the Louisiana Housing Corporation and the Louisiana Attorney General's Office have joined forces to create a public service announcement (PSA) video. This collaborative effort aims to educate the public about fair housing rights and legal avenues to address housing discrimination. By pooling their resources, the LHC and the Attorney General's Office are strengthening their outreach and ensuring that individuals are well-informed to overcome potential challenges in accessing fair and affordable housing.

"We are proud to partner with the Louisiana Attorney General's Office in creating this video and utilizing it as a valuable resource to educate Louisiana citizens about their fair housing rights and what actions they need to take if housing discrimination occurs," said LHC Executive Director Marjorianna Willman. "We hope this video empowers individuals with the knowledge they need to combat housing discrimination and promote inclusive communities where everyone has access to safe, decent, affordable, and energy-efficient housing."

"If you feel that you have been wrongfully discriminated against, you have one year from the date of the event to file a complaint with the Attorney General's Office, but you should file it as soon as possible," said Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill.

Due to last week's weather-related issues, LHC rescheduled its Fair Housing Summit to April 30th. LHC acknowledges the critical role that fair housing plays in fostering inclusive and equitable communities across Louisiana. LHC is pleased to announce the new Fair Housing Summit date, ensuring that stakeholders and community members can still engage in vital discussions and educational opportunities.
