April 2024—The Louisiana Housing Corporation (LHC) proudly commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), reflecting on its profound impact on community development across the state.

Since its inception in 1974, the CDBG program has been instrumental in fostering vibrant communities, promoting economic development, and improving the quality of life for countless Louisiana residents. Administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the CDBG program provides flexible funding to states and local governments for various community development activities, including affordable housing initiatives, infrastructure improvements, and services for low-income individuals and families.

As a leading agency dedicated to advancing affordable housing and community development in Louisiana, the Louisiana Housing Corporation has been a staunch advocate partner in leveraging CDBG funds to address the diverse needs of communities statewide. Through strategic investments and collaborative efforts with local governments, non-profit organizations, and community stakeholders, the LHC has facilitated affordable housing development, revitalized neighborhoods, and promoted economic opportunity for residents across urban and rural areas.

"The Community Development Block Grant has helped Louisiana Housing Corporation rebuild neighborhoods, impacting communities' growth and thriving," said LHC Executive Director Marjorianna Willman. The CDBG program has been utilized in disaster recovery efforts in Louisiana to help cities and families get back on their feet after disaster strikes. We have seen direct results of how this program can help communities prosper."

Over the past five decades, CDBG funds have been critical in supporting a wide array of initiatives, including the construction and rehabilitation of affordable housing units, infrastructure upgrades such as road improvements and utility enhancements, and the provision of essential services such as job training and childcare assistance. These investments have strengthened the foundation of communities and fostered a sense of pride and resilience among residents.

Looking ahead, the LHC remains committed to leveraging CDBG funds, when possible, to address emerging challenges and opportunities in community development, focusing on promoting equitable access to affordable housing, fostering economic mobility, and building resilient communities that thrive for generations to come.

As LHC celebrates this significant milestone, the corporation extends its deepest gratitude to HUD, local government partners, community organizations, and residents for their unwavering commitment to advancing community development principles and creating opportunities for all.
